This project\u00a0aims to provide empirical data on the alleged political bias of Dutch media. It also\u00a0aims to contribute to the development of an instrument for the measurement of partiality in\u00a0TV interviews. Its main question is: are TV interviewers biased in putting adversarial questions to\u00a0politicians with different political backgrounds?<\/p>\n

The data collection encompasses 12 interviews\u00a0taken from the late-night talk show Pauw & Witteman during the run-up to the parliamentary\u00a0elections of 2006. The analysis focuses on five measures of adversarial questioning that were\u00a0developed by Clayman et al. (2007): initiative, directness, assertiveness, opposition and accountability,\u00a0as well as on a sixth measure that was developed in the context of this study, persistence.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0results show that left-wing politicians are approached less adversarially than right-wing politicians\u00a0and politicians in the political centre, even when various factors that might offer an alternative\u00a0explanation are included in the analysis. The conclusion is that interviewers are partial in shaping\u00a0the way in which politicians can present themselves to the public.<\/p>\n

In our first study of the talk show 'Pauw & Witteman', we found that interviewers are partial in shaping the way in which politicians can present themselves: left-wing politicians are approached less adversarially than politicians in the political centre and right-wing politicians (this project is presented above).<\/p>\n

In this follow-up study, the focus is on the potential role of other participants in the interview setting in the construction of the bias in persistence, i.e., the editorial team of the talk show, the other guests at the table, and the audience in the studio. Its aim is to provide empirical data on the platform dynamics of the interviewer bias that was found previously. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Nederlandstalige versie van het vervolgonderzoek: Politieke partijdigheid in TV-interviews: Een co-constructie van verschillende partijen in de setting?<\/h6>

In de aanloop naar de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen van 2006 vormde de tv-talkshow Pauw & Witteman een belangrijk setting voor politici om zich te profileren. Deze setting was niet politiek neutraal (Huls & Varwijk, 2011): links geori\u00ebnteerde politici ontvingen minder aanvallende vragen dan politici van rechts. De analyse van de contextfactoren die deze partijdigheid zouden kunnen verklaren was veelomvattend, maar heeft geen verklarende factor opgeleverd. De conclusie luidde dat de gevonden partijdigheid door de gespreksleiders<\/em> was geproduceerd. Toch is deze conclusie mogelijk prematuur. E\u00e9n gegeven is namelijk veronachtzaamd: de talkshowgesprekken zijn geen \u00e9\u00e9n-op-\u00e9\u00e9n gesprekken. Het is de vraag van dit project\u00a0of andere partijen in de setting \u00a0\u2013 de programmaredactie, andere gasten aan tafel, het publiek in de studio \u2013 bijdragen aan de politieke partijdigheid. Dat blijkt niet zo te zijn. Dat betekent dat dit onderzoek de geldigheid van de eerder getrokken conclusie dat het de gespreksleiders<\/em> zijn die de partijdigheid produceren versterkt.<\/p>\n

In de aanloop naar de verkiezingen krijgen politici kans zich te profileren en te laten zien waar ze voor staan. Van de interviewers wordt verwacht dat ze kritisch en onderzoekend zijn, en tegelijkertijd de politici eerlijk behandelen en iedereen gelijke kansen geven. Gebeurt dit ook? \u00a0<\/p>\n

Deze vraag stond centraal in verschillende onderzoeksprojecten van studenten die ik opgestart en begeleid heb:<\/p>\n
